The rapture hatch designs on Fullerton Free Church are another excellent example of lighting used to encourage and love on an entire community. Around Christmas time, the hatch is traditionally lit on two sides in blue with star projections as a temporary installation. In early Spring 2020, church leadership began toying with the idea of more permanent projections. I was tasked with turning their tentative designs into reality. In all the projects, I was given a gobo designed by the church's graphic designer and asked to make it as close to the verbal descriptions of leadership as possible. The most prominent and long standing of those designs has been nicknamed the Fullerton Free Heart. At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, leadership wanted to send a message of love radiating off of all four sides of the rapture hatch to the neighborhoods surrounding the campus. While simple in theory, this design presented some unique challenges. Power is not readily available on all areas of the roof, so I had to create an elaborate power structure from scratch to ensure safety and efficiency. Because the church did not own IP rated fixtures capable of projection at the time of implementation, we also had to come up with a weatherproofing system for the instruments in the rare case of a Southern California rainstorm.
